Delicious Easy Golden Milk hits the spot on a cold Winter day! Warm, creamy, filled with delicious spices, this sweet warm soothing drink resembles the coffeehouse version, made easy with ingredients you already have. The use of Pumpkin Pie Spice makes it easy and gives it a hint of holiday eggnog flavor, sans the glop.
The temperatures here have gone sub-zero (in Fahrenheit!) and all I want are hot drinks all day long. It’s not healthy or even desirable to me to drink caffeine all day, so instead, I switch between Easy Golden Milk, Blue Majik Cardamom Milk, and my Hot Cocoa with Peppermint. Each of these offer a soothing warming effect and each has their own additional health benefit.

Turmeric Milk (aka Golden Milk) originated in India as part of Ayurvedic medicine and even predates Chai tea. Ayurveda tailors preventative care to individual needs, considering the individual’s constitution (dosha), ailments, season or climate they’re being treated in. Turmeric milk was often given for throat ailments such as a cold, and was known for it’s soothing and general healing properties.
Turmeric is now widely known for it’s powerful anti-inflammatory benefits. The spice, known for giving curry its yellow color, contains curcumin, the most active compound in turmeric. Curcumin is a potent antioxidant which can neutralize free radicals, and that means all kinds of disease prevention including heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, and depression as well as other chronic disease.
Curcumin is not well absorbed into the bloodstream on its own, however adding a bit of black pepper has been shown to enhance absorption by up to 2000%. It is also fat-soluble, so taking with a bit of fat also helps absorption. For this reason, you may want to add 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil while making Easy Golden Milk. If the milk you use already has significant fat content, the additional coconut oil should not be necessary.

Recently, coffeeshops have been making Golden Milk, a whipped and frapped-up sweetened delight to drink. Super easy to make at home and guarantee you're getting the health benefits. Maple syrup or honey are added in my Easy Golden Milk to keep the sweetener on the healthier side. I also add a touch of vanilla, but you can skip this if you’re using vanilla flavored milk. My easy shortcut is the use of Pumpkin Pie Spice, which everyone seems to have on their spice rack these days, so why not find another use for it? It adds complex spices to the milk and gives it almost an eggnog flavor because of the nutmeg in the spice mix. If you don’t have Pumpkin Pie Spice, use a combination of cinnamon and ginger, maybe a pinch of cardamom, or see my Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix recipe here.
