Mocha Protein Smoothie

Coffee lovers, here you go! Use some leftover morning coffee to make this Mocha Protein Smoothie recipe. It has been my number one most popular smoothie this summer and I can't seem to get enough of it. It's rich in chocolate and coffee flavors, thick and creamy, sweetened with frozen banana and honestly tastes like a mocha milkshake or malt (remember those?)

I've personally never been a coffee drinker, however I've always loved mocha flavored ice cream! How could you not? Perhaps it's the sweetness added to the combination of chocolate and the bitterness of coffee that I'm really attracted -- make that "addicted" -- to. For sure, I'm a dark chocolate fan so maybe it's natural that I'd also be a coffee fan. After all, they are both beans, grown in the same climates, and both are typically roasted before use. It makes perfect sense that these two antioxidant-rich foods combine well to make the magical rich flavor combination we call "mocha".

Mocha Protein Smoothie packs a whopping 28 grams of protein from multiple plant protein sources including Sun Warrior, Warrior Blend Vanilla protein powder, almond butter and chia seeds for additional whole food sourced protein and healthy fats and fiber. Additionally, a spoonful of oats helps thicken it up as another whole plant food with additional fiber. Frozen banana makes it milkshake-like, but once again comes from a whole plant source instead of processed sugars or sweeteners. This smoothie really is healthy AND delicious! And, while you may be stuck on protein, this smoothie also packs a whopping 13 grams of fiber, which is what actually keeps us satiated for longer.

I use Vanilla flavored Sun Warrior, Warrior Blend Protein but you can use Chocolate Flavor protein powder for an even richer chocolate taste. The reason I use Vanilla is because I have it available at all times in my pantry for the majority of my smoothies. I love adding cacao to my recipes (instead of cocoa powder) because cacao is less processed and may include additional undamaged antioxidant benefits.

If you like mixing up your protein shake routine, try some of these other smoothie recipes as well. One of my long-time favorites is my Chocolate Mint Smoothie. Or, when I'm feeling like I really need a nutritional boost, like after a hard workout, I have my Chocolate Power Smoothie, with extra nutrient-dense additions. And, as summer starts feeling a bit like Fall, my Pumpkin Pie Smoothie really hits the spot.
