Warm Spring and Summer weather means the onset of smoothie season, and by making smoothies with a healthy plant-based protein source, along with a myriad of antioxidant and fiber filled ingredients, a smoothie becomes a full meal replacement, satiating and nourishing the body for hours.
This Chocolate Power Smoothie is full of healthy protein sources, fats, flavonoids and antioxidants. Not only is it a nutrition powerhouse, but it tastes like a chocolate milkshake! Do not underestimate the power of ice in making smoothies more "shake" like. Be generous with the ice. Vegan, gluten-free, full of flavor.
Where does the 'Power' come from? Chia seeds provide a great source of Omega-3's and also help thicken the shake, and Sun Warrior-Warrior Blend Protein is the main source of protein. Almonds are a great source of vitamin E, protein, and fiber. Pumpkin seeds are a great source of magnesium, zinc, antioxidants and healthy fats. Goji berries are another antioxidant superfood with vitamin A and iron and have been said to enhance the immune system. I love throwing a few goji berries into various smoothies, and it does not distract from the chocolate flavor of this one at all.
Of course, cacao is full of polyphenols (antioxidants), linked to reduced inflammation, increased blood flow, improved cholesterol and lower blood sugar. Be sure to use raw cacao powder and cacao nibs, since cocoa powder has been processed, and in doing so loses many of its powerful health benefits.
